As libraries continue to evolve, new and innovative ‘gadgets’ are being added. The New York Public Library just completed a two-year $12 million renovation of the Rose Reading Room. Replacing the old conveyor belt system for book retrieval is the $2.6 million ‘book train’ . The book train cuts down the delivery time to the circulation desk to about five minutes from 30. The book train spans over 950 feet of track assisting with the delivery of over 4 million books which lie in storage beneath Bryant Park. The systems runs on electric and consists of 24 cars that can carry up to 30 pounds each.
