Modern Libraries Around the World

Posted by Tracy Lenok in News

There is no doubt that today’s libraries are facing a rebirth to keep up with the digital landscape. Gone are the days of quiet, dark spaces and old wooden chairs and shelving.

Pictured below (and included in this link to the 25 Modern Libraries from Around the World) is The Black Diamond Library located in Denmark. Notice the natural light flooding the atrium and adjacent rooms.

Black Diamond Library Denmark

Like the photo above, as you scroll through these 25 amazing libraries, you will notice the open, airy spaces with lots of glass and colors throughout. The architectural curves in the design of not only the structure of the building, but also of the furniture, creates a contemporary and serene style. Our brains are said to react more positively towards shapes and curves versus straight lines, which can resemble sharp objects.

Whether it is a new project or a renovation to an existing library, BCI Modern Library Furniture has over 60 years of experience to make your dream a reality. Going Back on Throwback Thursday with BCI Modern Library Furniture

Posted by Tracy Lenok in News

This Throwback Thursday we are showcasing an amazing public library furniture project from a few years back. The Fairfield Public Library, located in Fairfield, CT has had many additions to the original 43,000 square foot library since its construction in 1903. Unfortunately, these additions produced a very irregular flow in the building. With an increasing number of patrons, upgrades to the interior and technology framework were needed.

By combining new custom end panels to some of the existing shelving in the library, the cost was kept well within the budget. A rich selection of both custom and standard furnishings from BCI Modern Library Furniture were selected and created that modernistic look and usability.

Beautiful Libraries are Getting Noticed

Posted by Tracy Lenok in News

“There’s so much more to a book than just reading.” – Maurice Sendak

We are all aware that the libraries of today are well beyond books, they serve the community in many other ways. What use to be known as a quiet environment, is now a gathering place. There are now ‘teen spaces’ in libraries as well as meeting rooms for community use. The use of ultra modern designs are widely being incorporated into library buildings making them a unique focal point.

The Institute of Museum and Library Services released a report focusing on the uptick of visitors to libraries when money is spent on building and renovations. As a matter of fact, the report also showed that when money wasn’t being invested, visitation dropped.

Wired, a monthly magazine which is published in both print and online, recently did a feature on “Settle Into 10 of the Most Beautiful Libraries on Earth”. Wired spotlights on how emerging technologies are affecting our economy, politics and culture. This article featured two libraries Dokk1 in Aarhus, Denmark and Stormen Public Library in Bodø, Norway which both included BCI Modern Library Furniture.

BCI Modern Library Furniture’s Throwback Thursday

Posted by Tracy Lenok in News

Being it’s Throwback Thursday, we decided to take a look back at some library renovation projects we’ve done over the years. The project we selected was completed at Teaneck High School in Teaneck, NJ. We worked with DMR Architects – http://www.dmrarchitects.com/ from Hasbrouck Heights, NJ to take their Media Center into the 21st Century.

The furniture for this renovation project was purchased through the ESCNJ (Educational Services Commission of New Jersey) , which offers both quality and fair pricing.

The three-story brick building was built in the early 1920’s and is roughly 228,000 square feet. With a growing district, space had become a challenge. In order to tackle this comprehensive renovation, a phasing plan was needed to keep the disruptions to the school activities at a minimum.

While working jointly with both DMR and the Teaneck School District, we conducted an extensive space utilization and programming study of the existing library to assist us in developing a short-term construction plan. Included in the renovation was the rearranging of existing office walls, new lighting, carpeting and a complete new furniture layout.

The district and DMR favored a blend of contemporary designs that were functional, but yet hi-tech. BCI Modern Library Furniture’s vast selection of custom and standard furnishings provided the solution. The materials such as frosted glass, warm maple wood and the hi-tech look of perforated steel, gave this project beautiful results!

BCI Modern Library has an endless amount of standard and custom furnishings that will enhance any new or renovation project. Contact us today for more information on how we can assist you in the design and planning process for your new library – we look forward to speaking with you.

NJ’s Haddonfield Public Library Showcases BCI Modern Library Furniture

Posted by Tracy Lenok in News

The Haddonfield Public Library located in Haddonfield, NJ has been at its current site since 1917 – almost 100 years! Without taking away too much of the library’s history, a modern renovation was needed to take the library into the 21st century.  The library board president Deborah Marchand was quoted as saying, (we need) “to take what had been a fairly inflexible space and make it more flexible and open and welcoming.”1

BCI Modern Library Furniture had just the answer. BCI’s furniture is known for its ability to be flexible, while maintaining its durability. The renovation is slated to cost $2.2 million dollars and has taken over 15 months. The furniture was purchased through the ESCNJ (Educational Services Commission of New Jersey). The library plans to open in August, 2016.

Products: Uniflex Steel Shelving

Haddonfield library’s choice of the Uniflex Steel Shelving provides the flexibility needed for this new space. The Uniflex Steel Shelving has a classic style which fits into the architecture of the building.

Below are some of the actual installation photos.

The Rising Popularity of Public Libraries

Posted by Tracy Lenok in News

InfographicHere’s a fast fact – Did you know that more people visit their public library each year in Massachusetts than attend Patriots, Celtics, Bruins and Red Sox games combined? [1]

Yes, it’s true! Libraries are cool!

Libraries are evolving into more than just a place to check out a book or rent a video. Libraries are serving as a hub for communities. Gone are the days of having to stay quiet in a library. The transformation that is taking place is simply amazing.

The graphic on the right shows that Americans feel libraries provide a significant benefit to their communities for supplying them with resource materials and advocating literacy.  Best of all – they are free!

Not only are books a large part of the library, but technology is just as important. Patrons come in with their smartphones, tablets, and laptops and require wi-fi and USB ports.  With these evolving technologies, furniture with built-in outlets and USB ports can provide the user access to all the information right at their fingertips.

The recent economic downturn sent people searching for jobs to their local libraries to utilize the Internet services and reference materials. According to the Information Policy and Access Center (IPAC), 77.5% of libraries provide support with creating resumes. Public libraries have been joining forces with institutions and organizations at the local, state and national level to strengthen their ability to assist job seekers by offering career services.

The Pew Research Center reported that the younger population, ages 16-29, are becoming regular patrons of their local libraries.  They are finding libraries are a great place to go online, study or just meet friends.[2]

Libraries are rebuilding or renovating their layout and interior design. Library furniture needs to be high quality, comfortable and provide flexibility to support the current information technology age. Children’s areas need to be equipped with furniture that is age appropriate and designed to elevate the library experience. Many libraries also serve their communities with meeting space and classrooms and require tables, chairs and even podiums. Library café’s are also gaining in popularity – who doesn’t like to enjoy a cup of coffee while studying, working or chatting with friends.

So, what’s in store for the future of libraries – here’s one more quick fact from the American Library Association ‘Americans go to school, public and academic libraries more than three times more often than they go to the movies’.

Libraries are here to stay.Library card
