Modern Libraries Around the World

Posted by Tracy Lenok in News

There is no doubt that today’s libraries are facing a rebirth to keep up with the digital landscape. Gone are the days of quiet, dark spaces and old wooden chairs and shelving.

Pictured below (and included in this link to the 25 Modern Libraries from Around the World) is The Black Diamond Library located in Denmark. Notice the natural light flooding the atrium and adjacent rooms.

Like the photo above, as you scroll through these 25 amazing libraries, you will notice the open, airy spaces with lots of glass and colors throughout. The architectural curves in the design of not only the structure of the building, but also of the furniture, creates a contemporary and serene style. Our brains are said to react more positively towards shapes and curves versus straight lines, which can resemble sharp objects.

Whether it is a new project or a renovation to an existing library, BCI Modern Library Furniture has over 60 years of experience to make your dream a reality. Our products are designed for functionality, flexibility, comfort and allure. We partner with world-class architects to design a library for the 21st century. Beautiful Libraries are Getting Noticed

Posted by Tracy Lenok in News

“There’s so much more to a book than just reading.” – Maurice Sendak

We are all aware that the libraries of today are well beyond books, they serve the community in many other ways. What use to be known as a quiet environment, is now a gathering place. There are now ‘teen spaces’ in libraries as well as meeting rooms for community use. The use of ultra modern designs are widely being incorporated into library buildings making them a unique focal point.

The Institute of Museum and Library Services released a report focusing on the uptick of visitors to libraries when money is spent on building and renovations. As a matter of fact, the report also showed that when money wasn’t being invested, visitation dropped.

Wired, a monthly magazine which is published in both print and online, recently did a feature on “Settle Into 10 of the Most Beautiful Libraries on Earth”. Wired spotlights on how emerging technologies are affecting our economy, politics and culture. This article featured two libraries Dokk1 in Aarhus, Denmark and Stormen Public Library in Bodø, Norway which both included BCI Modern Library Furniture.

As libraries continue to evolve, new and innovative ‘gadgets’ are being added. The New York Public Library just completed a two-year $12 million renovation of the Rose Reading Room. Replacing the old conveyor belt system for book retrieval is the $2.6 million ‘book train’ . The book train cuts down the delivery time to the circulation desk to about five minutes from 30. The book train spans over 950 feet of track assisting with the delivery of over 4 million books which lie in storage beneath Bryant Park. The systems runs on electric and consists of 24 cars that can carry up to 30 pounds each.

2015 AIA/ALA Library Building Award Winner Features BCI

Posted by Tracy Lenok in Uncategorized

CR PL

Among the six awardees of the 2015 AIA/ALA Library Building Awards was the Cedar Rapids Public Library.  These awards,  which are governed jointly by a division of the ALA, the Library Leadership and Management Association (LLAMA), and the American Institute of Architects (AIA),  embolden superiority in architectural planning and designing of libraries.  These new modern library designs are needed to accommodate the needs of the community and bring libraries into the 21st century.

After the disastrous flood of 2008, the Cedar Rapids Public Library was completely destroyed.  Five years later, the new modern Cedar Rapids Public Library opened its doors. In addition to the building encompassing the green building certification program known as the LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) Platinum Requirements, BCI Modern Library Furniture was selected to provide shelving.  The product chosen, our 60/30 Radius Steel Shelving, is a flexible shelving system which can be used to create a variety of solutions.  Click this link – Cedar Rapids PL Layout to see the layout of the shelving – there is a multitude of arrangements the 60/60 Radius Steel Shelving can produce.
